Enlarge Homer Simpson - Worksheet- KS3/KS4

This an engaging way to teach coordinates using Homer Simpson. A nice starter activity to an enlargement lesson where students can begin to gain an appreciation of how lengths change but angles don't.

KS3 KS4 maths games: fractions, mental arithmetic

Mostly Maths games to rehearse mental arithmetic but Shoot the Sheriff and Wheel of Reward are generic. Where questions are not provided you can verbally call them out to aid assessment during a starter or plenary. The games are a great way of adding a little fun and engagement during key parts of a lesson.

Planet Hunter - Revision of percentages

(5)
Quite a challenging task involving ratios and percentages that I created following a talk by Lord Rees at a Prince's Trust Institute residential. Students will need to measure distances, simplify ratios, write one number as a percentage of another, increase/decrease a quantity by a percentage and calculate reverse percentages.

Enable macros, go to Tools in Excel, then add-ins, ensure Analysis Toolpak and Analysis Toolpak-VBA are installed. Store summative and day to day formative data, electronic seating plan, learning objectives/outcomes, a register from the day to day data, a detention register and log of parental contact. Real plus is the mail merge facility: sorts your outcomes of a week into a tables: strength or area to develop, according to the day to day data and can be given to students to reflect on; display objectives/outcomes on a board; analyse your seating plan against FFT residual or working grade

A great way of seeing strengths and areas to develop from an assessment or homework. Handy thing is it also writes you a comment (following something similar to blackbox marking) from the assessment if you put in the objectives of each question. To ensure all features of this program work, please enable macros, then go to Tools in Excel, then add-ins and ensure Analysis Toolpak and Analysis Toolpak-VBA are installed. You will need to copy and paste special (values) the comments into a separate file to be able to read them.

Interior angle sum investigation

(2)
A neat way of relating the interior angle sum to different types of polygon, whether they are regular or irregular. Students measure the angles in their irregular polygons, complete the pattern and then measure the size of the angles in the shape in the centre - what do they notice?

(1)
An adapted TES resource idea that allows up to 32 students to be graded across 3 different categories or 3 different activities. At the moment the example is set to effort, behaviour and progress, but could also be used for 3 different rounds of a game. You can set the categories and the weighting of points for each category. This works best with small groups to motivate individuals by adding a sense of competition. You can reward the top 2 students for one week's work and start from scratch the next to keep the motivation high.

Students are to choose several companies to invest in and watch how their share prices fluctuate. A great lesson activity as a competition or linked with sequences.

The powerpoint enables you to give up to 3 questions (with 3 possible answers) during a starter or plenary activity to aid assessment. I have included a timer (3..2..1..Show) to help add a sense of discipline to the activity. The answers are animated to come up afterwards. This could be best described as a cheap 'Who wants to be a millionnaire'. Simple, easy and effective.

https://mathswhiteboard.com/MWB/home The Maths White Board (MWB) site has been specifically designed to support a teacher’s/learner’s journey through a topic and the use of mini white boards. The site is packed full of differentiated Maths topics that have been beautifully scaffolded to lead users through a desirable teaching/learning sequence. The software currently comprises of 3 main tools: MWB, WB RECALL and WB SECURE. MWB - A powerful tool to support the use of mini whiteboards during classroom assessment. Questions are displayed in full screen. WB RECALL - Ideal for recapping on the full breadth of a specific skill (starters/revision). 6 questions (1 at each level) is shown on the board. WB SECURE - In order for techniques to be cemented into long term memory, sometimes we need to just give students a few similar questions for them to learn routines. This feature produces 6 questions at a single level and displays it on screen. The MWB website is the perfect tool for classroom assessment but also massively reduces on the need for photocopying resources for students to use. The site has recently seen a lot of growth. Questions and features are being continually added. The most recent addition was the “LAST” tool: 4 questions on 1 screen to assess last lesson, last week, last topic and last term. This is great for starter recaps.

SUBJECT WORLD: Teacher Mobile App

Subject World is an effective way for students to record their school life. This app accompanies the student version and draws all the data from the student accounts. The data collected can then be used to view/edit the student information. It can be used to create a dynamic seating plan, record/view performance/homework data, set detentions, control AfL activities using the built in functions, collaboratively build a bank of revision cards, mind maps and websites. It has changed the way I store and disseminate information forever. If you want access, please contact mrwslab@gmail.com
