DNA Replication, Transcription and Translation

I put this together for the Higher Biology course in Scotland but it will be appropriate for A/S. Some good animations of replication, transcription and translation that you can click through to help explain the process to students. Hope you find it useful.

Inheritance: Beaker Babies Genetic Activity

(8)
Activity to help you students understand genetics, characteristic, genotype, phenotype and gamete. Partner up your pupils and get them to create their ‘child’. Fun for you! Practice at genetic diagrams for your pupils. You will have to make a template for the chromosomes, I use pink paper for girls and blue paper for boys. They write in the code for their characteristics in the chromosome and cut it up and place it in a beaker, then they pick randomly the characteristics inherited from each person to build their child.

Found this really difficult to classify. I work in Scotland and use this for National 5 Biology but it could be applied to post 16 Biology in England for further description please refer to word document - I couldn't fit it all in here!!

DNA, Chromosomes, Genes and Proteins starter activ

(4)
A set of flashcards for a starter activity. Pupils have one card of the four each. When asked a variety of questions they have to hold up the appropriate card. Good for assessing whole class knowledge of different keywords for inheritance and genetic topics. Photocopying on different coloured card helps.

Mitosis animation

(6)
A power-point animation on mitosis. This was made for a National 5 Biology class in Scotland but would be appropriate for A/S. However be aware that the names of the stages have not been given and the detail of when replication occurs is not accurate (I know this occurs in interphase - so please don't put that in any feedback). Hope that you find it useful.

Get pupils into University teams. (they can come up with names e.g. University if Life) For starter questions individual pupils only should answer. I made them stand up to indicate they wanted to answer. 5 points for answering starter questions correctly and then their team gains control for the remaining questions in the round. Minus 5 points for conferring during starter questions or answering incorrectly. I like dressing as Jeremy and being just as brutal - great fun. Enjoy. Please feel free to adapt questions or add to file.
