Simple Samba

(4)
Improving rhythmic awareness & pulse internalisation. This fun and simple KS2 activity uses a short call and response chant to introduce samba rhythms. As the activity progresses, the words are taken away, building up children’s rhythmic awareness and pulse internalisation. This activity can be extended to include percussion instruments and is a great warm up for a music session.

Replace the word: pulse internalisation & literacy

(3)
In this activity children learn the poem 'Remember, remember the fifth of November', concentrating on understanding the poem's rhythm and pulse. By later replacing some words with actions, children internalise the pulse and the words are consolidated further. This principle can be used with other poems of this type, and indeed songs as well, that are chosen to link with a topic. In this film Artis Specialist Russell Lucas (Gloop) demonstrates &'Replace the word&'; working with Year 3/4 children from Ponsbourne St Mary's CE Primary School in Hertfordshire.

Chant: sense of rhythm and pulse internalisation

(1)
First you make your fingers click is a cleverly written chant in which there is a click, a slap, a stamp and a clap, each on a different beat of the bar. It gets children thinking about rhythm and is useful to improve their sense of rhythm and musicality. The activity can be extended by taking the words out and doing just the actions - this will develop pulse internalisation and children's overall musicality. This activity is a good warm up for a music session and also helps to get children ready for work.

Enhancing concentration, teamwork & listening. This activity begins with children closing their eyes, listening for an instrument and responding to the location of the sound. Concentration and listening are key as children need real focus to follow the sound and respond appropriately. This is a great activity for team work and group awareness with children working as a collective, moving and responding together.
