Deep in the Rainforest

(3)
A rainforest / jungle poem with a repeating pattern which children can recite and add actions to. In my Y1 class we have shared written extra lines for I saw.. I heard.... I felt etc. then children have written their own and we have added them to the main text. This works well as the children's lines don&'t need to rhyme and you can add as many as you like.

Favourite Toy Poem

I used the two opening verses as a starting point for children's writing, to encourage them to add detail about their toys. We recited these together and talked about different types of questions. Three verses written by the children have been added, containing a few guided 'tweaks' to fit the metre and add rhyme where appropriate but we mostly focused on writing lines containing interesting information and helpful description for the reader rather than generating rhymes or following a strict pattern.

Some Plants

A list poem on the theme of plants. When I have used it with classes I have linked it with information texts on the same subject. Children added their own lines which didn't need to rhyme.
