Introduction to Waves

(21)
Powerpoint, worksheet and lesson plan for an introduction to waves lesson. I've included a version with and without a demo to allow it to fit different length lessons. A video in place of the demo can be found here (but tortillas work best!): http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/calculating-the-speed-of-light-using-a-microwave/8736.html

Classification guess who

Fun starter activity for the topic of classification, to get pupils thinking about ways to group animals. Pupils play 'guess who?' using the sheet, instructions are listed at the bottom of the page. Instructions for use: The game is played in pairs. Each pupil has a copy of the sheet and picks an animal before the start of the game. Pupils then take turns asking questions of each other to guess their opponent’s animal. I laminated the pages and had pupils play using whiteboard pens but other teachers I know printed on paper and had the pupils perform a cut and paste activity after playing.

This is a worksheet which pupils can complete as homework. The website suggested on the sheet has lots of useful information on the topic and an interactive worldmap allowing pupils to learn independently. The website can be found here: http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/

Wave amplitude and wavelength activity

Pupils look at 8 wave diagrams and decide if the amplitude and wavelength is constant or changing for each one. I’ve left a copy with the construction lines I used to draw the waves as I think it’ll make the activity easier for some pupils rather than having to measure with a ruler. Most pupils should use the version without the construction lines in though. Took me a while to draw…
