Using protractor powerpoint demonstration.

(39)
You may well find a better one, but not a cheaper one. This is a powerpoint that lets you demonstrate using a protractor using powerpoint. It does not need any intereactive whiteboards. If you know of a better one that is easier to use, pop it in the comments and I'll remove the resource! Instructions on page 1 of powerpoint.

Scale drawing - design your own theme park

(37)
Activity lesson for students to design a theme park and draw it to scale. There is a student self and peer assessment sheet also. Students love this as it is a bit more inspiring than design a bedroom or garden and students will talk about size estimates for real life objects. Also good for display work.**** updated for a bit more challenge

A powerpoint with quotes about maths in speeech bubbles. Print on colour paper, cut out (laminated looks even better!). Use to liven up a dull display or fill a small gap. Also useful for hiding small bits of grafitti and unidentified sticky marks rather than replace a whole display. Job done!

(17)
Powerpoint showing a large wall display made from fish shapes. The shapes are coloured by several hundred students in registration time and assembled by year 8 and year 10 students. The powerpoint also contains the supporting info for sticking on the display and the word document is the multicolour banner for the title. Comments please if it is useful to post 'ready to make&' wall displays.

Irregular Tessellations Activity - Maths meets Art

(22)
Mathematics and Art come together in this PowerPoint showing some funky irregular tessellation patterns. Included are the basic tiles which are photocopy able resources, plus a couple of links to good tessellation sites.See also my 'Easy to Make Tessellation Wall display' resource if you like this - great fun and the students get to do all the work. Ideal maths and art classes at KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 and Post 16.

Harry Potter's Potions (A Ratio lesson).Powerpoint

(22)
A bit of fun for a cooperative year 7 group. PPt of Harry Potter potions (all from the films) - use ratios and scale up potions. Students then develop their own potion for their chosen purpose and use direct proportion or unitary method to scale up and down. Good for display work. Ends with a Voldemort, and a link to youtube for a totally don’t-do-it-for-ofsted but its a youtube classic. Did this because this group loved a bit of mystery in the Apprentice Trials. Added extra youtube link at Rowan's request!!

The Wizard Apprentice Trials

(24)
Rich task/revision - A story setting for revising assorted year 7 topics - number theory, sequences, ratio. Students work in groups of 3 and solve puzzle tasks. The tasks allow them to progress on a journey to rescue the treasure and palace sprites from the Giant Bebothered. I did it as a 2 lesson challenge with hints for the students, but really making them think things through and use a Maths dictionary and text books to solve the rpoblems rahter than rely on teacher help. Students loved it, in the future I may jazz it up a bit with a powerpoint to introduce the task with some fx and music. Let me know if you think I should.

Rounding and estimating task. Powerpoint lesson.

(19)
Starts with rounding practise (assumes students have already covered this) then moves on to a modelled example of estimating. Students then form groups of 2 or 3 and seelct a sheet with an estimating task, challenge levels vary between 1 and 3. Has local interest topics included so unless you know Northampton (where?) suggest you remove these 2 examples.

Practical focused area and perimeter of rectangles

(13)
Lesson that uses basic knowledge of area and perimeter of rectangles and puts a practical face on it. Designed for a mixed ability group so it ranges from compound shapes made of rectangles into more analytic problems. Self contained but need to print required sheets. Answers on notes pages of powerpoint.

Maths keyword posters

(14)
These are lovely looking posters containing keywords for Algebra, Statistics, Geometry and Number. They were done using the website tagxedo.com which allows you to create a word cloud for your own choice of words in a number of formats and styles. Well worth a visit. They do not have any explanation of the keywords but they appeal to students as they are at once beautiful and a bit of a puzzle.

Cuboid nets - make a mobile phone

(12)
Lesson allows students to design a mobile phone and make a net then build it, or they can use preprinted nets and add their own features, or they can make a fake life sized Blackberry or iphone. Suggest students use sellotape not glue as they are a bit fiddly as the shapes are quite slim. Hope you enjoy using this as much as I enjoyed making it! Please comment as if there is any interest I thought I may extend it to making packaging or slot cars or similar.

Meat Masterchef - Real life graphs and algebra

(8)
Functional maths type scenario. Students inagine they are working in a butcvhers and need to make labels for roasting joints and meat. This involves reading conversion graphs, creating conversion graphs, developing formula from worded information, rearranging equations for temperature. A bit teacher led, you may like to print notes pages to give to more able students so they can speed ahead. There is a simplified foundation version.

Carpet your bedroom - functional maths

(7)
An activity for students to design a tessellation of carpet tiles for their bedroom. From the design they need to work out costs from screenshots of carpet tile prices, calculate the cost fo the glue. There are 3 levels to this task - from a basic bronze version to the gold version which includes an algebra extension related to cost of getting a carpet fitted. Very real world focus and some good discussion if you let the students use their own bedroom floor plans or students start to use part carpet tiles or use hexagonal tilings etc. Enjoy

Real life contexts for trig and Pythagoras, including gradients of roads, felling trees, surveying roads, landing aircraft. This is a good worksheet for independent learners and those needing extension work. Also supports the maths needed in BTEC Engineering and Construction. Answers included on the end of the sheet. Comments and corrections welcomed.

Edible Sequences

(6)
Powerpoint framework that uses midget gems and cocktail sticks to build sequences of patterns and works towards algebraic notation and nth term. Great for maths discussions. Its a bit 'in development' as it use the midget gems and cocktail sticks - I may simplify to one variable. H&S - cocktail sticks are sharp, wear eye protection and check your chair before you sit. Most midget gems are NOT vegetarian safe, read out the labels to the class.

This lush powerpoint shows many crop circles then uses them as a stimulus for students to practise using their pairs of compasses. Use as enrichment or as a warm up to the serious business of bisecting angles and other constructions. Excellent display work. Students needing more challenge can be fed prompts to include triangles... or hexagons etc etc. Enjoy.

Simple countdown clock that will not upset your IT tech

(7)
Simple countdown clock in powerpoint. Counts down in minutes, plus 30 seconds at the end. Pretty cheap and cheerful, but as it does not involve downloading any .exe files from the network, it can run on any school network, regardless of the security settings and filters. If you CAN download an exe file, the internet timers available are far more wizzy!
