We are always looking for ways of making our lessons more exciting and accessible to the pupils, doing something different in a different way to make a difference. Enterprising teaching and learning by any other name. Here I offer a lesson that I have taught to a low ability year 7. The topic was ‘The Rock Cycle’ and I wanted to show how through the application of heat and pressure you could change the structure of the rocks (i.e. how metamorphic rock is formed). This is a difficult concept for some pupils to grasp. So what better way to demonstrate this concept than by making CHEESE TOASTIES. Please have a go at teaching the lesson and make a difference through doing something different in a different way.

This piece of work has been designed for the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) specifically to support the themes of Adaptability, Challenge, Creativity, Resilience, Reflection and Responsibility. It can however be used in KS3 and KS4 English lessons to stimulate creative writing It could be adapted for Whole school CPD and for PHSE to discuss the importance of friendship. This is an 'off the shelf' presentation that addresses and suggests a way that 'Peer support' in the form of 'Peer Mentoring' can be used to facilitate and support transition from KS2-KS3. It draws on the work of Jenny Mosley's principle of Quality Circle Time and uses her idea of the 5 steps to Quality Circle time, here the author acknowledges Jenny's work. This programme has been successfully used in schools and the work was acknowledged and published in 'Moving to Secondary School' Lynda Measor and Mike Fleetham, Network Educational Press (2005) ISBN 1-85539-200-3. There is supportive material in the form of an organisational plan, an adaptable certificate for peer mentors and a lyrics page to use for analysis and for empathic understanding of the featured music 'I am Beautiful' by Christina Aguilera. This is an ‘Off the shelf’ resource that has been used successfully many times to encourage and promote ‘Positive Management in Classrooms’ during my career as an educator and trainer in all educational settings. It can be used as an introduction to this critical area of school and classroom management for INSET and staff training. The emphasis is on positive classroom management by identifying and explaining areas of conflict through the ‘Conflict Spiral’ and then outlining ‘De-escalation’ techniques using the C.A.L.M. approach. The presentation is interactive and allows for group and collegiate discussion to build on a whole school approach to positive classroom management. N.B. ‘The Pepsi Challenge’ is the use of a bottle of Pepsi/Coca-Cola, shaken to illustrate how actions can often destabilise and escalate a sitution in a classroom setting.
