Powerpoint that outlines an activity where one group of children who are the newsroom based reporters first watch a short news item (the Japan earthquake March 2011) then have to retell details to another group (reporters on location) to enable them to 'go live' with a news report. The reported then "go live" and share the new item with the class or in front of their group (lots of fun if you have a microphone for them to speak into - you could even get someone to video). After this activity they go on to write their own news report and publish in Fodey - a newspaper clipping generator.

These worksheets follow the RAWS acronym developed with our class. To tackle a word problem they must RAWs! READ the problem. ASK yourself what the question is asking you to find out. WRITE out the problem using the numbers and operations. SOLVE the problem. Once they solve it, as a treat they can colour in the picture. These have worked really well in class combining strategy, challenge and a bit of fun!

This is designed as an introduction for Year 3 and 4 students to begin unpacking What is a Fraction. It gives clear definitions for 1. What is a fraction? 2. What is a denominator? 3. What is a numerator? Once you have gone through the PowerPoint, then you use the Rub Out Technique. This is a fun, engaging technique to enable the students to learn the definitions off by heart. It is especially good for Non-English speaking students. Instructions on how to do this are given in the PowerPoint and the template can be used to write the sentences once the have been learned off by heart.

I hope the links work as they are NZ based ( the links are to NZ based Maths resources which are excellent). 'What does joy sound like?'Aim was to get students to paint pictures with words plus develop editing/ proofreading skills. Edited powerpoint was done as the first one did not meet 'What I am looking for' (I left out adjectives on purpose as editing and proofreading were sorely lacking) so as a class we edited it. Got some lovely writing which we published as a class poem on the wall.

This is a fun and engaging to get your kids to write! The PowerPoint point includes 5 Quick Write prompts plus a slide explaining the purpose of the activity, the activity itself and who the audience will be. I often write at the same time as my students and they love me sharing my writing with them. By doing this I am modelling as well as participating and it helps build the concept of the classroom as a "community of writers". It's fun...have a go!
