Abstract Expressionism, in quotes of the involved artists in the United States - mainly painters - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in American art history

.
Here you find selected artist-quotes on American Abstract Expressionism by its leading artists Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, but also of Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline and other involved artists, living and working in the United States. Abstract Expressionism was in fact the first American modern art movement in the U.S., also called ‘The New York School’.

The involved artists started Abstract Expressionism in the years during World War 2. It was mainly in New York where they lived and worked; they were almost weekly mutually connected and could easily exchange their ideas and views on modern American art, in several bars. The art-debates were frequently and intensively in America and later abroad - spoken, as well as written. So this generated many of their artists-quotes!
.
Some selected artist quotes on American Abstract Expressionism - as a short introduction of its extended quotes in the PDF:**

’When I am ‘in’ my painting, I am not aware of what I’m doing. It is only after a short of ‘get acquainted’ period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through.’ - quote of Jackson Pollock, in: ‘Possibilities’, Vol. 1, no 1, winter 1947-48

’I am always in the picture somewhere. The amount of space I use I am always in, I seem to move around in it. And there seems to be a time when I lose sight of what I wanted to do, and then I am out of it.’ - quote of Willem de Kooning (1950), in: ‘Modern Artists in America, First Series’, eds. R. Motherwell, 1952 p. 12

’Painting is aesthetic enjoyment; I want to be a ‘poet’. As an artist I must conform to my nature. My nature has a lyrical as well as a dramatic disposition…’ - quote of Hans Hofmann, 1950: in ‘Artists’ Session at Studio 35’

It really works to collect the artist quotes, to explain this American art movement. <br /> It makes me clear an art movement is not one dimension, but a living striving.
