Boating in the Summer Palace, Beijing

Last updated 06 February 2012, created 06 February 2012, viewed 192

The Summer Palace in Beijing was built by the Qing emperors to escape the hustle and bustle of court life and was the venue used by the Dowager Empress Cixi for her lavish birthday celebrations. An imposing Buddhist temple overlooks a vast artificial lake, surrounded by elaborate pagodas and bridges More…. Little wonder that this idyllic place now draws hundreds of tourists and residents wishing to spend a leisurely day away from the city centre.
