Camille Corot in his quotes - the artist on painting Nature & French landscape in open air and on his artistic life in France - free art-resource for students, pupils and teachers of French art history

.
Many of Corot’s artist-quotes here are selected from his ‘Notebooks’ where he described how to catch the atmosphere of the landscape he wanted to paint. He wrote about his sensations and feelings - sitting in Nature and painting what he felt… .He also gives painting instructions; Corot was in his time a famous French art-teacher in Paris.

Moreover Corot was a rather classical painter, but frequently he painted his paintings in open air, on the spot in very subtle, but loose brush strokes! He became during his life already famous for his subtle and natural nature or landscape paintings with their characteristic delicate atmosphere. That’s why Corot had a strong influence on the later French Impressionist painters as Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot and Cezanne who loved his art. Even Gauguin admired him!

Some selected artist-quotes of the famous French artist Camille Corot - as a short introduction of his extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’…it seems to me very important to begin by an indication of the darkest values (assuming that the canvas is white), and to continue in order to the lightest value. From the darkest to the lightest I would establish twenty shades… .Never lose sight of that first impression by which you were moved. Begin by determining your composition. Then the values - the relation of the forms to the values. These are the basis. Then the color, and finally the finish.’ - quote of Corot, c. 1828 from his ‘Notebooks’

  • ’Be guided by feeling alone. We are only simple mortals, subject to error.’ - quote of Corot, c. 1856; from his ‘Notebooks’

  • ’You know, a landscape painter’s day is delightful. You get up early, at three o’clock in the morning, before sunrise; you go and sit under a tree; you watch and wait.’ - quote of Corot, c. 1857; description of the beginning of a day in Switzerland, Château de Gruyères, 1857
