Classifying Elements, Mixtures and Compounds

Overall rating 4 out of 54.8 (5 ratings)

Last updated 29 November 2012, created 25 June 2011, viewed 7,596

A simple help sheet that allows student to figure out whether an unknown substance is an element mixture or compound by giving them a series of questions to ask about the name of that substance.

Have used it with year 8 and 9 but it is particularly useful for More…btec where for part of the coursework, students have to identify an unfamiliar substance and state whether it is an element, mixture or compound.

Great way to get students thinking about the names of substances whilst learning about elements, compounds and mixtures. Thanks for sharing

Simple - but effective - shows students how important it is to think about the name of a substance as an indication of its composition.
