These lessons build towards an understanding of Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘Education for Leisure’ and give students an opportunity to work on using language appropriate for poetry analysis, such as modal verbs (e.g. ‘could’, ‘may’ and ‘might’) and modifiers (e.g. ‘possibly’, ‘perhaps’ and clearly’) which help students show tentativeness or certainty in their response to poetry, ultimately helping them to consider different readings of a poem, its language, messages and ideas. Used at Key Stage 3 but easily adaptable.
