Overall rating 3 out of 53 (1 rating)

Last updated 18 January 2012, created 19 September 2011, viewed 1,518

An investigation for KS3 students linked to the Enigma Code-breaking machine. It has clear teachers' notes, and a level-ladder used for self- and peer-assessment as well as teacher levelling. The investigation centres on the combinations of rotors used in an Enigma machine, and encourages the use of systematic working to record results.

A really nice investigation into combinations/permutations which is based on the Enigma code breaking machine. This resource is sure to engage pupils as it is interesting and has a context which the kids will enjoy thinking about. I would use this with a decent ability KS3 class in order to develop thinking skills and encourage independent thinking.
