Fauvism in France, described / explained in quotes of Matisse & other Fauvist artists + art images - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in French art history

.
Quotes on Fauvism by the Fauvist artists, like Matisse, Derain, Denis, Marquet, and Van Dongen. These Fauve-artists describe and explain the intentions and goals of French Fauvism. Colored flat forms played an essential and leading role in Fauvist art in France.

Fauvism was a typical French modern art movement which started simultaneously with Cubism and Futurism.
Matisse was a leading Fauve artist; he described already very early (1908) the goals, choices and techniques of Fauvist painting style and art. In describing the Fauve art style Matisse emphasizes the strength and necessity of using unbroken colors and colored forms - in strong opposite to French Cubism, c. 1908 - 1912.

Some selected artist-quotes on French Fauvism - as a short introduction of its extended quotes in the PDF:**

  • ’We come to the most stupefying gallery in the ‘Salon’ (of Paris) still teeming with shocks… …no resemblance to painting: variations of color without form; blue, red, yellow, green; splotches of raw color juxtaposed any which way; the barbaric and naive games of a child…’ - quote of art-critic Marcel Nicolle - his notorious comment on the ‘Salon d’Automne’; in ‘Journal de Rouen’, Nov, 1905

  • ’I heard the people… …cry out in front of the paintings by Matisse. “It is madness!” I had the pleasure of replying: "But no, sir, on the contrary. It is the product of theories.’ - quote of André Gide: in his review ‘Promenade au Salon D’Automne’, in ‘Gaz. Beaux Arts’, Dec. 1905

  • ’What I am after, above all, is expression… …I am unable to distinguish between the feeling I have for life and my way of expressing it.’ - Henri Matisse: in ‘Notes d’un Peintre’ (‘Notes of a Painter’), Henri Matisse - Paris, 1908

Not for young kids. But Matisse explains here well about his Fauvism painting.
