Hamlet: Michael Boyd - The role of women

Last updated 17 April 2012, created 17 April 2012, viewed 190

Director Michael Boyd explains the lack of power that women like Ophelia had in Shakespeare's day. The only way for her to increase her family's fortunes is to marry well. But with Hamlet now seeming to be mad, he's no longer a good match for her. This video is from the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2004 production of Hamlet.
