A look at one school’s fresh outlook, encouraging pupils to start reading, writing and enjoying books, using phonics.

Headteacher, Alex Lundie, at Broadmead Infant’s School, Croydon, was initially sceptical over the Rose Report recommendations but saw results.

Here, Reception and Year 1 classes are shown at work. The key at Broadmead has been to see phonics as a tool to be used in the bigger project of KS1 literacy, rather than as an end in itself.
