This resource has been expanded and illustrated. It is now on helpmeteach, com. It needs a classroom full of computers with people able to do research on them. The teacher provides the photocopied texts and instructions and then chairs the following discussion. The teacher then sets some written wor More…k or perhaps a wall chart. Good starter for discussion on race. This is a good background for a teacher on an important subject. Guidelines for research are regularly given.

This is an extremely comprehensive resource, providing a real wealth of information for teachers unfamiliar with African history who want to explore a little further. There are useful tasks built in for students, which could be used as they stand, and the quality of the research provides loads of scope for creating many different types of activity with this as the starting point. I really like the geographical reflections and the comparisons between African and European development at different times. What really emerges is a sense of a nuanced history which is so often lost in summary treatment of the region in British textbooks. Commendable!
