These interactive exercises were made using the free Qedoc Quiz Maker. You can use the resources directly from the website, or you can download the Quiz Player and the resource to your local PC. This module is designed to support the learning outcomes of Phase 4 of the letters and Sounds programm More…e. There is no new learning in Phase 4, but rather an overlearning of phonemes and graphemes learned through Phases 2 and 3, with a focus on blending for CVCC and CCVC words. As far as possible the exercises reflect the suggested types of activity in the Phase 4 document. With the exception of Activity 3 (Practising Blending) and the final activity (Jack and the Beanstalk), all the activities make use of data tables, so that they will be different each time they are attempted. Most of the activitities would be suitable for use on an interactive whiteboard, as well as for individual (supported) pupil access on a computer. CVCC and CCVC activites will also include more complex, but easily decodable blends (e.g. CCVCC, CCVVC etc.) Activity 1 Grapheme recognition (all Phase 2- 3 graphemes) A simple interaction which presents random graphemes (10) for the pupils to identify the sound. Speed is determined by how fast you can click your mouse! Activity 2 Grapheme recognition (digraph graphemes) As Activity 1, but students are only presented with random digraphs. Activity 3 Blending for reading CVCC and CCVC words This is a Flash based interaction, emphasising how simple words can be extended. The teacher/adult controls the slide presentation. The first slide shows the ‘short’ word, which the pupil(s) can be asked to read. The second slide shows the grapheme to be added to the word. There follows a simple animation, where the grapheme joins the ‘short’ word to make a new word and an image is displayed. Activity 4 CVCC word/picture match. The learner has to choose the correct image to match the word presented. Activity 5 As activity 4 for CCVC words. Activity 6 As activity 4 for both CVCC and CCVC words Activity 7 Countdown (30 second timer) CVCC A list of 12 CVCC words is displayed. Pupil(s) to read as many as they can in 30 seconds. A small clock counts down the time, and an alarm rings at the end of the time. Activity 8 Countdown (no timer) CVCC A list of 12 CVCC words is displayed. Pupil(s) to read as many as they can in time allowed by teacher. Activity 9 Countdown (30 second timer) CCVC As activity 7 Activity 10 Countdown (no timer) CCVC As activity 8 Activity 11 Countdown (30 second timer) CVCC and CCVC As activity 7 Activity 12 Countdown (no timer) CVCC and CCVC As activity 8 Activity 13 Segmenting for spelling CVCC An image is displayed with the graphemes of the word jumbled. Pupils have to drag (or direct) the graphemes to the correct order. Activity 14 Segmenting for spelling CCVC (As Activity 13) Activity 15 Segmenting for spelling mixed CVCC and CCVC (As Activity 13 & 14) Activity 16 Tricky word recognition. Randomised display of tricky words for learner to read. Activity 17 Polysyllabic word recognition. A word is presented with a supporting image, for the learner to read. Activity 18 Sentence/picture match. Learner clicks on the image that goes with the sentence they have to read. Activity 19 Sentence substitution 1. From the root sentence "Jack said we can go to Manchester in a car." a variety of sentences are generated, where the various parts are interchanged. Where possible, I have included tricky words in the sentences. Activity 20 Sentence substitution 2. As activity 19, with the root sentence "Mary said they were going to come to Liverpool for a week." Activity 21 Jack and the Beanstalk An illustrated retelling of the story, which the adult/learner reads. Each section then has a simplified sentence for the learner to read, with a missing word which the learner has to choose from a drop down list. The alternative words share phonic features with the target word.
