Multiplication and division practial problems (three days).

Children use counting in twos, fives and tens to find out how many objects (e.g. socks and fingers) there are in total. They record repeated jumps of 2, 5 or 10 on beaded lines. They also use their counting skills to find totals of amounts of 2p, 5p and 10p coins. The concept of grouping is linked to counting in repeated steps, and as the inverse of ‘lots of’. Sharing is linked to finding half, and children investigate which numbers from 10 to 20 can be shared fairly without cutting one in half or leaving any over. We do not use the concept of sharing for dividing by numbers other than 2 since we shall want to link this type of division to repeated addition/multiplication, e.g. how many lots of five give me twenty?
