Find complements to the next multiple of ten [three days].

Children see that they can use their knowledge of pairs to ten to find out how many need to be added to a two-digit number to make the next multiple of ten. At first they see the complement on bead strings and record the hop to the next ten on beaded lines. As they move to using landmarked lines, they need to use their knowledge of pairs to ten and work mentally, rather than using the visual prompt of the beads. This skill is put into context of number stories.
