Reasoning and explaining (three days).

Children use their knowledge of addition facts to arrange digit cards into three rows such that every row has a given total. Addition facts are also used to complete addition grids where numbers to be added are unknown, not just the totals. Certain numbers have to be worked out before it is possible to find others. Children are asked to explain their number suggestions. They then use their knowledge of inverse operations to solve ‘I’m thinking of a number’ puzzles, explain how they found the mystery number. They also write their own. The link with function machines is made.
