Mental and written addition of two- and three-digit numbers (five days).

Children revise using Splits and J10 to add pairs of two-digit numbers and to add three-digit and two-digit numbers together. They choose which strategy they wish to use depending on the numbers involved. Expanded addition is introduced for the addition of pairs of three-digit numbers, initially with pairs of two-digit numbers so that children can see how it works. At first no pairs of digits total more than 10, and then they are introduced to pairs of numbers where the 1s digits total more than 10, e.g. 434 + 325. They learn that adding the most significant digit or the least significant digit first makes no difference to the answer.
