Problem solving (five days).

Children read and discuss word problems to decide what needs to be done to the numbers in the problem to solve it. The word problems are single step and all four operations are included. They go to solve simple multi-step problems. Products, sums and differences are given and children work out which pairs of numbers have been used. Children make odd and even numbers from columns of multilink as one way to explain why the sums of pairs of odd and even numbers are odd or even. Children investigate the sums of two neighbouring squares on a 1-100 square (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) and write general statements about their findings. Problems are set about the numbers of times given digits appear on clocks during the day or in page numbers in a book. Children discuss how to break the problem down into smaller parts.
