Fractions, ratio and proportion (five days).

Children change improper fractions (where the top numerator is greater than the bottom denominator) into mixed numbers (e.g. 5/2 becomes 2½) and vice versa. They use this to order a mixed set of improper fractions and mixed numbers and place them on a number line. The equivalence between 1/4s and 18/s, between 1/5s and 1/10s and between 1/3s and 1/6s is used to help to order 1/3s, 1/4s, 1/5s, 1/6s, 1/8s and 1/10s and to place them on number lines. Children continue to learn about the link between fractions and division and use this to find 1/3s, 1/3s, 1/5s, 1/6s and 1/10s of quantities. Fractions are also used describe proportions and children are asked to make multilink sticks from different numbers of cubes but with the same proportions of different coloured cubes.
