Reasoning and explaining (three days).

Children find the difference between numbers with the same digits reversed (e.g. 37 and 73, 245 and 542) and make a general statement about what they notice. They find patterns of digital roots (plotted round a circle of digits 1 to 9) of numbers in multiplication tables and discuss which multiples give similar patterns. Various Fibonacci-type sequences are created and children are asked to look for patterns of odd and even numbers. They are asked to use their knowledge of sums of odd and even numbers to explain these patterns.
