Mental and oral starters for Year 5 Spring Teaching Sequence 4.

Multiplication and division
Multiply a one-digit by a two-digit number. Know by heart multiplication facts for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 times tables, and learn corresponding division facts. Use doubling of two-digit numbers to double decimal numbers e.g. double 3.4. Use doubling of two-digit numbers to double decimal numbers e.g. double 3.4. Multiply multiples of ten by single-digits. Use chunking on the empty number line to divide two- and three-digit numbers by single-digit numbers, including those leaving a remainder. Begin to use the grid method to multiply three-digit numbers by single-digit numbers. Multiply single-digits by multiples of ten. Use doubling of two-digit numbers to double decimal numbers. Multiply multiples of 100 to 900 by a single-digit number, e.g. 700 × 4.
