Great resource. After looking at how you suggest setting out the multiplication (links to long multiplication that they already know how to do) it does allow for organised thinking and less errors. All the errors I've seen pupils making is because they get lost in what they are doing. The multiplying diagonals is a great investigation for students - I've actually seen something similar to this set as a question in an IGCSE (the international GCSE) examination.
