Grampian has made the following appointments: Carole Hawthorn, formerly deputy head of Strathburn Primary School, is now head of Pitmedden Primary, Ellon, Aberdeenshire, replacing Moira Smart,who retired on health grounds; Valerie Smart, formerly head relief at Barthol Chapel School, became head o More…f Cairnorrie Primary, Methlick, Ellon when Dorothy Bond transferred to Logie Durno School; and Zofia Colling, formerly acting head of St Joseph's Roman Catholic School, became head of Broomhill Primary, Aberdeen when Gladys Simpson moved to The Netherlands.

Philip Bujak, head of lower and middle school, Langley School, Norfolk has been appointed the first headmaster in the 62-year history of Stover School, an independent school for girls in Newton Abbot, Devon from April 18. He succeeds Wendy Lunel.

Dennis Reed, deputy head of local government at Unison, has been appointed chair of the Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education. He replaces Yvonne Kilburn.

Jed Griffiths, formerly chief strategic planner at East Sussex County Council, has been appointed president of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He began his working life as geography master at Easington Lane Secondary Modern School, County Durham.
