Robert Rauschenberg in quotes; the artist on his painting, collage art & artistic life in the United States - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in American art history

.
Robert Rauschenberg’s artist quotes describe his search for a fitting position in American modern painting art in the 1960’s. He gives us by his artist quotes an impression of his artistic life in America with his art-mates painter Jasper Johns, composer John Cage and choreographer Cunningham.

Rauschenberg explains his art-roots ànd the fundamental differences between his art and Abstract Expressionism in the U.S., with leading artists Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. He differs strongly with their attitude of creating art as a ‘struggle in torture and pain’ which he criticizes strongly.
.
Some selected quotes of American artist Robert Rauschenberg - as a short introduction of his extended quotes in the PDF:

  • ’I defend the idea of art and know that it is made up of all these paintings. Classic pictures are objects that may or may not influence what you’re doing, just like anything else. Like the radio… .But it hasn’t anything to do with your own art…’ - Rauschenberg’s quote, in ‘Is today’s artist with or against the past’, James Schuyler, ‘Artnews’ No. 4; New York, U.S., 1958, pp. 46-56

  • ’I am sick of talking about What and Why I am doing. I have always believed that the WORK is the word. Action is seen less clearly through reason. There are no shortcuts to directness. - quote of Rauschenberg, c. 1965, cited in: ‘Robert Rauschenberg, The early 1950’s’, Walter Hopps, Houston Fine Art Press, 1991

  • ’It’s almost as if art, in painting and music and stuff, is the leftover of some activity. The activity is the thing that I’m most interested in. Nearly everything that I’ve done was to see what would happen if I did this instead of that.’ - his quote from an interview with Richard Kostelanetz, in: ‘Partisan Review’ No. 35, New York, United States, 1968, pp. 96-106
