Overall rating 4 out of 54.8 (4 ratings)

Last updated 05 February 2012, created 09 December 2010, viewed 5,374

The Powerpoint contains 12 pieces of roller coaster track that the learner can use to design a new rollercoaster. These are designed to printed and act as a cut and stick exercise. Teaching notes are included giving a guide for the task. Once designed, the learner can choose a mass for their More… carriage and then calculate Gravitational Potential Energy, Kinetic Energy and Velocity.

A really good, hands-on approach for teaching a dry topic. Thank you!

A good activity but the calculation for the extension task is wrong. As they both drop from the same height and have the same mass their potential energies and kinetic energies will be identical regardless of the motor used. The 2 motors will have different efficiencies which will account for the different amounts of electrical energy used.

Nice design activity for students linking to relevant physics, including a variety of extension questions to provide stretch and challenge.
