This activity, which is recommended for Years 3 to 5, has been devised by the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire (www.roalddahlmuseum.org) to support the museum’s Roald Dahl Schools Postcard Prize Draw. It could be used alongside work on any Roald Dahl novel as More… well as to study the effectiveness of the postcard as a means of communication and the opportunities postcard messages give for economy of text. Children are asked to hotseat Dahl characters and compose postcard texts from and to the characters after studying examples. Their postcards can then be entered for a prize draw (closing date September 12 2007) with a prize of a class visit to the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre or Seven Stories, the Centre for the Children’s Book in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Full competition details are attached (in one of the 2 lesson plan files) plus the lesson plan. Topics also included; narrative texts; Well known authors and books.
