Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure

Overall rating 4 out of 54.7 (13 ratings)

Last updated 16 January 2013, created 17 May 2009, viewed 9,145

An alternative to 'Florence Nightingale', a Year 2 history unit on Shackleton and his crew's incredible story of survival. This new topic was met with lots of enthusiasm and empathy from our Year 2 pupils. There are also some good opportunities for cross-curricular work on 'Forces & Friction' in Science and also 'Making Sledges' in DT.

I am planning an all new topic based around Shackleton's trip to Antarctica and thought I'd just check if there was anything around already. This is great-thanks for all your hard work. I'm sure I'll magpie some parts of it!

Hello Cacia, Was incredibly interested to see your Shackleton based work posted. I do a whole term's worth of work on Shackleton/Antarctica in a Y5/6 class and am heavily involved in the ITAE 2014 centenary work. My great-granddad was on The Endurance so that is why I love the story so much. Please contact me at ekerr@egloskerry.cornwall.sch.uk so we can discuss this further and work towards a very special '2014' unit of work. Regards Emma Kerr

Thanks! I had a great time with my Yr1 class last year doing a geog unit on Antarctica (penguins!!), and wanted to do it again, but run it over 2 terms and tie it in with a short linked history unit. I'm now full of ideas from your planning. :0)

Brilliant, thank you. I'd been wondering how suitable this topic would be for Year 2. Your planning has inspired me to go for it!
