Created for a high ability Year 9 group studying Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, these poetry lessons encourage students to appreciate how both classic and contemporary poets (as well as artists and stage set designers) have depicted corrupt, decaying societies. After exploring Hogarth's etchings of licentious London and the poetic language of Shakespeare and Blake, students study a contemporary poem, 'City Lilacs' by Helen Dunmore, in preparation for writing their own poems that deal with similar issues.
