Definitions, key words, characters, settings and sentence examples for many narrative genres. (In response to last review -I totally agree. We did lots of discusssion and it was mainly the children who came up with the ideas in these guides. Just found that it didn’t matter what type of writing t More…hey were aiming for, they all ended up sounding the same. Also found that this helped me get my head around the differences. Just intended to be a taster, not a comprehensive guide to writing…but thank you for your comment.) Topics also included: settings.

Brilliant resource! I read the children the examples and they had to match the genre - once we had learnt about them they were made into displays. Useful!

Great resource - we cut the examples into strips and had to match them to the genre justifying our decisions. Thank-you.

Excellent- we will get the children to match genre description sheets with example text extracts. They will have to match them across tables to get them up and moving around until all the sheets have their partner. This will be after today's pure discussion and sorting of books into genres we came up with as a class. Thanks!

Who are the stories by?. really nice fonts and pictures and a great resource I could use over and over again. Just one question, where did you get the stories, who are they by and what are they called becasue I think some of my class would like to read more!

Examples are very useful. Thank you for this resource. The examples of fiction writing will be very useful - the children can decide in to which genre each piece belongs.

from Marie ODea, 10 March 2008

useful but be careful. yes, this is presented in a succinct form and could be used to give an introduction to genres. However, the definitions are narrow and may discourage critical discussion among pupils to decide what genre best describes their text/ own writing. Sometimes it's more useful for pupils to look for commonalities and contrasts across a number of texts, in order to come up with their own set of criteria for a particular genre.
