In ‘The Teachers TV ITE Lectures’, Maggie Webster, Senior Lecturer of Primary Education, delivers a lecture on teaching English as an Additional Language.

Drawing on current research, Maggie identifies EAL pupil, explains the context in the classroom and the barriers. She then explains how to support EAL pupils and discusses the merits of ‘immersion’ or ‘bilingualism’ before moving on to how the use of language and visual keys can help. Maggie gives practical examples using key ITE texts as well as examples from real school situations, thereby linking theory to practice.

Very helpful lecture. Despite some of the statistics being out of date now, I feel that the essential messages and top tips are as relevant as ever. I am sure that the content of this lecture will help me further my current research into how best to support EAL children, and that I will be using some of what I have learned today in my job as an NQT in a school with a high number of EAL pupils. I would love to hear/watch follow-up lectures on this subject with more examples and good practice-bring them on!!!

Really good explanation of how language is acquired by EAL students. Worth spending the time to watch this video if you are one of the many colleagues who worries about how to help the EAL students in your classes. I shall certainly be recommending it as part of then next EAL training session I run. The statistics are out of date now but the basic content is still as relevant today as when this was filmed. thanks TES!
