Behaviour guru, Sue Cowley, works with a Key Stage 2 teacher at Whitton Middle School, Worcestershire, offering advice on maintaining lesson flow and dealing with distractions, in ‘Manage that Class with Sue Cowley’.

Using cameras and microphones concealed, Sue Cowley is able to observe and comment on a Year 5 lesson taught by Jenny Gunsten without being present in the class. Sue provides support and coaching to Jenny through a concealed earpiece.

She also provides a commentary on the lesson structure, pace and tone covering behaviour and learning issues.

Good advice about not getting sucked into just dealing with poor behaviour.

I thought the lack of direct engagement/involvement of pupils in the lesson was the key issue here and should absolutely have been addressed. Twenty-five minutes before the pupils got to make their own learning by showing and playing their instruments to each other?!!! Get children doing and experiencing the subject in hand and the disruption caused by disengaged pupils evaporates like summer mist! And what about praising the whole class? More praise, more affirmation for ALL pupils, at every opportunity, is such a powerful factor in promoting Attitude to Learning. And what about engaging with the 'disruptive' boy as a person, with positivity, interest and warmth? None of these points were made but seem like obvious ones to me!!!

I liked Sue's response to teachers knowledge of own pupils. Good feedback on teacher' s voice. When and where to draw the line between experimentation and bad behaviour made me look at when my lessons become less fun and too much teacher lead. A nice reminder to what we strive to achieve.

I thought this was really good - can Sue come to my classroom, please? She was so positive yet very clear on what could be done better.
