Inspirational Key Stage 2 geography specialist, Jane Whittle, leads her class on a magical journey through the school's own woods, in ‘KS1/2 Geography’.

The aim of the lesson is to create a map of their route but first, the children explore the woods picking up reminders More… of their experience along the way - leaves, moss, bottle tops, and so on which they fix to their own personal 'journey sticks'.

Armed with sellotape, drawing pins and tons of enthusiasm, Jane and her class explore the personal nature of geography, the countryside code and elements of map-making.

This is fantastic - we did a similar activity with our KS1 classes at the common near our school. It was led by Groundworks and I watched this with interest to see what our activity would be like. The only way ours differed was that we used strips of coloured wool to tie or wrap objects on. Year 1 made linear maps, and year 2 did both kinds though not in such detail. Year 2 also did fantastic observational drawings of their journey sticks.

Wonderful - love it. We are planning on several visits to our local park after the holiday. This activity is a fantastic hook for the children to inspire learning.

Wonderful. We'll be making journey sticks in the forests of Tenerife.
