A problem solving activity using a guess-check-improve method. Activity is a 'Guess Who's coming to dinner' problem. Aim is to find out where each family member of the Simpsons sits at dinner table. I model the problem using 4 guests on the board, then with 5 guests using interaction with pupils, More…trying to guess where each family member sits using the clues provided and checking/improving pupils then tackle the problem with 6 guests, using the clues and character cards . Extension: I asked the pupils to write their own clues to test another pair and swap their clues.

My class of Y3/4 used this activity as part of a maths enrichment day. It worked well as a differentiated task.

Excellent resource. All kids love Simpsons so very easy to get them interested in the first place (half the battle!) Really enjoyed working through this.
