The Voice of Deaf Students

Last updated 26 April 2011, created 14 June 2010, viewed 2,248

A group of hearing impaired students write an opera. Follow the progress of more than 20 deaf and hearing impaired children as they create an opera from scratch. At Westgate College in Kent, teachers Sue Childs and Sandra Hampton believe it is a mistake to think that deaf people cannot enjoy, ap More…preciate, or want to be involved in music. All of their pupils have a hearing impairment which affects their speech, some are profoundly deaf and most have never seen an opera. However, what they come up with must be good enough for an audience at the Winter Gardens at Margate. Teachers and students have only a few short months to create this original piece of musical theatre. It has to be written, composed, designed, and rehearsed, all before its opening performance
