This is a DfES review of early intervention schemes that have been devised to help struggling readers and writers. It asks which schemes are used with children in years 1 to 6 in the United Kingdom; what the schemes are like; and how effective each one is. Most of the schemes relate to the NLS ‘thir More…d wave’, that is, specifically targeted intervention for pupils identified as requiring SEN support.

Chapter 2, esp starting from page number 11 (as at the bottom of the page) is where to go if you are in a rush. Having said that, it is worth reading beyond the bold typeface conclusions in section 2. This paper gives an overview of lots of interventions used in schools along with their effectiveness as revuewed/ researched at the time (80's, 90's). Since a lot of these programs are still in schools it means you can look a program up by name or type or see what might be effective. It didnt state any conclusions that my SENCO hasn't already shared in her approach to providing interventions, so probably if you are a trained experienced SENCO you know all this. But for me as a classroom teacher, it gave me a few details to think about checking in my own practice and reinforced a hunch that one of the programmes used in school isn't all that useful - not when you think of the human time it takes up for child and TA.
