The children have to work out the answers to the column addition sums. At the bottom of the page is a key, the children match each answer to a letter, and the letters make up the punchline to the joke. It kept the children glued as they were all eager to crack the code and get the joke. My Year 5s loved it, but it could easily be adapted for other year groups.

Hi, thanks for this. Will use with Year 3 as paired work tomorrow. Self correcting aspect of it means the discussion it raises should promote good mathematical thinking.
