L.O. To use non-standard uniform units or standard uniform units, to estimate and measure the length of objects.

I used this resource for a whole lesson activity to introduce the topic of measuring length to a Year 5/6 class of SEND children.

The first worksheet asks the children to choose between using fingers, counters, cubes or hands as a suitable unit of measurement, and then to estimate and measure a range of objects found within the classroom.

The second worksheet (contained within the download) is for the pupils who have already started to learn to use a ruler. It asks them to measure the same objects as in worksheet 1, but with a ruler/ metre rule (a standard uniform unit).

N.B. Bring straws to the lesson - the other objects being measured are all things found within a classroom!
