Aims: This scheme of work in comprised of 14 lessons which intend to promote both a love or reading and a foundation of skills required to be a successful reader:
1. Dictionary skills
2. thesaurus skills
3. novel openings
4. genre
5. characters
6. themes
7. prediction
8. hot seating
9. marketing a book
10. novel to film
11. plot/sub plot
12. narrative hooks
13. favourite books
14. reading aloud
Lessons all follow the same structure:
• Learning objective/ outcome
• Starter activity
• Five minutes to change books etc
• 20 minutes silent independent reading
• Teacher questioning/review
• Task linked to LO (20 mins)
• Plenary
Use of literacy centre managers:
• General support and admin during the lesson
• Withdrawal of identified students for 1:1 reading
Each lesson has a student help sheet.
Each student has their own resource booklet.
