This SMART and PowerPoint includes a series of 7 lessons and resources based around the question “What do religions say to us when life gets hard?”

Lessons look at the idea of big questions in religion, the difference between body and soul, reincarnation, moksha, judgement, funerals, Eulogy, Humanist views on death and children’s own views on the subject.

All lessons are discussion based with tasks that help children to express their thoughts and beliefs in a sensitive, supported way. The lessons touch on Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Humanist views on death and life after death.
The story Heaven by Nicholas Allen is used as the starting point to consider death in the context of the death of a pet and questions are posed sensitively.

Activities include writing a letter of advice to the girl in the story whose dog has died, filling out your hopes and dreams for the future, categorizing human qualities using a set of justice scales and the image of a ladder, writing a poem, drawing a self portrait and sorting belief cards. All resources are attached including sentence starters for the letter.

Lessons include videos, group/partner discussion, group tasks, individual tasks and making links to children’s own lives. All resources are included. Please note - the SMART and PowerPoint contain the same content, but you need Notebook software to open SMART.
