Bubble Writing - Handwriting scaffold KS1

(6)
Bubble writing - cursive handwriting scaffold Like many primary school teachers I have tried a variety of handwriting schemes with varying degrees of success. Having thought through many common problems with handwriting I have developed a simple scaffold that places a bubble either side of the line to support letter formation. This simple scaffold provides a guide to consistently form cursive letters and ensure each letter is uniform in both height and width. Children are able to leave equal spaces between words and see clearly whether or not there is enough space at the end of each line for the next word they intend to write. There has been a huge impact within my class in a very short space of time and I hope you will see similar benefits within your own setting. Included is a PowerPoint presentation including words from the Year 1/2 spelling list that can be printed as a handwriting pack for children to work through. Blank slides enable you to add words to suit your needs and finally 2 different sized PDF scaffolds that children can use to write on (If photocopied the bubbles will disappear to leave the writing that has been completed.)

Contains Talk Like a… Reader Writer Mathematician Musician Good Citizen Theologist Artist Scientist Designer Geographer Historian The sentence stems on the cards support discussions and writing! There are 2-3 different levels depending on subject to allow for progression. We had these cards professionally printed at a local printers, double sided with a matt laminate to avoid any reflection of light and I would highly recommend this! If you need to keep costs lower, I would suggest buying some matt laminating pouches. The cards we use across the curriculum. Their use should be modelled and encouraged by staff. Encouarge children to challenge themselves to use a variation of stems to avoid repeating the same starters.

A PDF printable Read Write Inc RWI Set 1,2 & 3 sounds assessment checklist I created this checklist to keep track of my Year 1 class and any gaps in phonic knowledge. It is helpful to track progress of any children who you are giving 1:1 RWI tutoring as well as being suitable for the whole class. Helpful when choosing sounds to focus on leading up to phonics screening. I made my own because I couldn’t find anything similar that met my needs. updated 9/10 /19- the ‘th’ sound was listed as ‘t’ in error so please download the update if already purchased. updated 14/9/20 - to include the additional RWI sounds.

Year 3/4 English - Ocean Meets Sky - Complete Lesson Collection - Literacy

A set of 15 fully prepared, highly detailed PowerPoint based lessons that include: the pages from the actual story, a range of activities per lesson, useful printable resources. The first two lessons are available to download free, to get a sense of the lesson structure (look in my shop). The book, Ocean Meets Sky, is beautiful. I have used these PP lessons with my Year 3 class and had incredible work created by them. Their level of thinking and inferencial work has blown me away, along with their writing. The work actually lasted me an entire term to get through - 6 weeks. There is more than a single lesson’s worth of work within each PowerPoint. I’ve poured my heart and soul into making these PowerPoints beautiful to see, easy to use, resource and understand. The lessons are definitely suitable for Lower KS2, and can work wonderfully with minimal adaptation for Upper KS2 also (my Y6 colleague confirmed this). **You do not need to buy the book in order to use these lessons **- the pages are within. But I would recommend buying ‘Ocean Meets Sky’ - the children LOVED reading this book (by the Fan Brothers) and seeing the illustrations in person. This beautiful and poignant story has stunning illustrations throughout (matched in the PowerPoints) and explores themes of family, memory and loss. The unit begins by introducing the authors to the children and highlighting the power of bookmaking/storytelling. Children find a mysterious box in the classroom labelled Grandpa’s Stuff. Inside they will find clues to who Grandpa was and his relationship with the main character, Finn. Finn misses his Grandfather after he has passed away and longs to travel to the fantastical worlds that his Grandpa would tell him about in his stories. Children are given a variety of meaningful writing opportunities throughout the sequence and gradually build up the skills to write an extended fantasy story of their own. Main outcomes: Setting and character descriptions, labels, diary entry, postcard, captain’s log, instructions, dialogue, extended fantasy narrative. The resources are based on the planning sequences for the same book by the Literary Curriculum. I’d recommend taking a look at their site for the planning document that aligns with this (and see the other brilliant stories they’ve created plans for).

Lost and Found: 2 week English plan and Resources

I have designed a 2 week ( 10 sessions) writing plan for KS1, Years 1 and 2, based on the wonderful story of ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. Every session includes all recources needed and notes for tasks and whole class teaching. This resource also includes 5 reading activities linked to the story, along with all resources. I have also included some ideas for links to PE and Art, as well as suggested internet sites that can be used to enhance learning. These plans can easily be adapted for an EYFS topic and this topic has been a firm favourite of mine to teach for many years now.
