Martin’s Big Words Lesson Plans & Activities Package, Second Grade (CCSS)

This set of lesson plans, resources, and activities is for use with “Martin's Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport. It can be used for whole group, small group, and independent instruction – which makes these resources a smart choice for literacy centers or Reader’s Workshop. Here's What You'll Get and Why: My goal was to make it easy to teach readers how to think about “Martin’s Big Words” using a variety of comprehension strategies. That's why I've included page by page lesson plans, guided practice worksheets, and text specific reader's notebook prompts for the following strategies: - Retelling and Summarizing - Making Inferences - Identifying the Author’s Purpose - Asking Questions - Synthesizing I also created an Extension Activity for early finishers. Next, I find that vocabulary instruction works best when it's done within the context of books that students are already reading. That's why I've included the following vocabulary resources: - Vocabulary Word List - Flash Cards (match words to pictures and match words to definitions) - Interactive Vocabulary Notebook Cards - Vocabulary Word Games Printable - Personal Vocabulary Word Bookmark I've also included a word study lesson plan and set of activities, because, much like vocabulary, I find that word study works best within context. As a result, I have identified word patterns within trade books and have developed lesson plans and resources based on the word study that can be done with specific books. The lesson plan and set of resources for “Martin's Big Words” focuses on Beginning Blends and includes the following: - Lesson Plan - Interactive Activity - Practice Page - Independent Word Work This set of resources also includes the following: - Running Record Assessment - Answer Keys - Common Core State Standard Alignment - Spanish translation of the comprehension strategy practice pages, reader's notebook prompts (complete with Spanish Common Core “I Can” statements), and extension activities for use with “Martin's Big Words” - BONUS: Surprise Sample Resource I hope that you will enjoy using my resources along with your copy or copies of “Martin's Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport. If you have any questions about the resources included in this set please email me at AmyMackenzie@BookPagez.com. It will be my pleasure to reply and help you in any way I can.

Informational Text for Close Reading: Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Universal Studios is at it again... Your students are going to absolutely love this selection. Use this informational text article to “hook them and hold them” for absolute sure! What a better way to practice metacognitive strategies for close reading. This article can be utilized to practice all of the many close-reading strategies that you have worked all year on with your students, which we all know, are life-long reading skills! The selection includes nonfiction information in regards to the new park opening on April 7, 2016, at Universal Studios, in Hollywood. The selection is approximately 750 words long and proves to provide the rigor needed for the complexity that is required of students’ text! At the conclusion of the article, there is a formative assessment (12 questions) that you might use for a teaching opportunity to go over specific skills and how the answer is derived (implicitly or explicitly stated for example) or of course it might be used independently as a comprehension check. There are many, many ways to utilize this selection to suit the needs of your classroom! I hope your students enjoy!

Also a child friendly resource I use with our children during our writing sessions for them to make sure that they are including the features needed to meet the 'expected standard' in the new curriculum. Can also be used as a peer or self assessment tool or even by teachers to check that their children are writing at the expected standard. Please leave feedback. Hope it helps!
