This is a multi sensory, plain English version of The Little Mermaid.
The story is based on the Ladybird Favourite tales version. It has been rewritten in simple language. The equipment is detailed so you can make a shopping list!
The multi sensory elements are described throughout the story, but feel free to adapt to suit your needs, or if you have a better idea!
I will be using the resource with secondary age, SEN (SLD / MLD/ complex needs) students for Literacy lessons.
The ‘chapters’ are quite short, so each chapter can be used as a sensory story. I plan to do one chapter a week with my class.
The use of multi sensory input helps students to retain and understand the information within the story. For more information about why sensory stories are beneficial Google Joanna Grace.
I hope you enjoy using this story with your students!

Includes RWI ditties for letter formation & has picture relating to the ditty/sound.
Note: g, f, y, j are not included as we don't do the exit strokes so I plan to just do these myself with pen.
The outline of the letter with the arrow has come from a twinkl resource, I&'ve just used and adapted this to make the resource. Feedback appreciated, thanks!

With the speaking, listening and writing we ask carers to email or let us know a couple of things that their child did at the weekend, so that we are able to prompt children or get other children to ask appropriate questions. We also check children's listening by asking 'Who went shopping, who visited family, who was ill, who walked the dog, where did they go, what did they buy' etc. before the students write what they did with help, by copying from a white board or working independently.
Also includes a colouring activity to check children's listening skills. Adult asks them to colour a particular part of the picture a certain colour and records if they did it correctly.
