This is a multi sensory, plain English version of The Little Mermaid.
The story is based on the Ladybird Favourite tales version. It has been rewritten in simple language. The equipment is detailed so you can make a shopping list!
The multi sensory elements are described throughout the story, but feel free to adapt to suit your needs, or if you have a better idea!
I will be using the resource with secondary age, SEN (SLD / MLD/ complex needs) students for Literacy lessons.
The ‘chapters’ are quite short, so each chapter can be used as a sensory story. I plan to do one chapter a week with my class.
The use of multi sensory input helps students to retain and understand the information within the story. For more information about why sensory stories are beneficial Google Joanna Grace.

These printable English resource writing activities are brilliant as they provide cross curricular links with History (The Victorians), ICT, PSHCE, etc. They can also be used for SATs revision. I have used them in a number of ways - as a carousel (few activities at a time for the areas already covered in English), as one of activity at the end of a unit, as SATs revision. Jolly Phonics groups 1- 7
Lower levels- name the pictures then find the pictures that start with the correct sound. Stick on the correct worksheet.
Middle levels- name the pictures then match with the words. Stick the correct sounds on the correct worksheet.
Higher levels- name the pictures, match with the words. Challenge the students to think of and spell their own words starting with the same sound.
Resources needed: glue, scissors, pencil, dictionary for higher levels to check spellings. Can be used after a phonics song to reinforce and consolidate learning.
Phonic peg cards - children attach a clothes peg to the correct sound.
Sounds included:
ck, th, ch, ir, sh, er, ur
3 cards for each sound, apart from ‘sh’ which has 9 cards.
27 cards in total. Best laminated so cards stay intact with repeated use.
Practical activity, could be used as independent task.
Designed for SEN group but equally appropriate for mainstream.

Say the rhymes with the students, get them to listen and recite each line afterwards, ask them to order the 4 pictures for each nursery rhyme, then use the differentiated worksheets to assess their writing and listening skills.
For the speaking, listening and writing worksheets we ask carers to let us know either during drop off or via email a couple of things their child has done over the weekend. We then ask the students what they did at the weekend, prompting other students to ask questions of their peers, and then do a recap by asking who did what to assess who was listening before getting the children to write either with help or independently what they did at the weekend.

This is a time-saving- just print and go - PDF resource with over 225 pages complete with words lists; word phrases; and sentences. This resource is designed to provide teachers and parents with premade lists for reading fluency practice for post skill presentations. This is not a resource that includes skills lessons, but as a supplemental resource to continue practice with reading fluency.

PowerPoint Phoneme Presentation - Optional (Use as reference - some children may still be struggling with segmenting/blending) - I have listed all the CCVC words and the units of sound above the fingers so that children can see and hear the separate phonemes (with pictures) - extension some children may be able to give you other meaning for the words in a sentence. I have highlighed that ‘plot’ and ‘plain’ have different meanings.
Encourage children to make simple sentences with the words to understand its meaning and distinguish between nouns, verbs or adjectives.

This program was designed for a multicategorical class in an Australian Support Unit (SEN) in which all of the students were diagnosed with ASD. The program worked on a small group or pair rotational basis and the students thoroughly enjoyed the transition between different Literacy areas of focus. This program would work well in any small group setting in which students are grouped on their areas of strength and areas for improvement.
This makes a good starter activity for low-mid ability but could be a quick recap even for higher ability in KS3. It was originally made for special needs as a starting point for a lesson on punctuation and they worked through it well independently and enjoyed doing the word search.
There are two sheets that shouldn’t take too long to do - enjoy!
Here is a worksheet for students to complete all about spelling errors, students are asked to circle the spelling error(s) and then correct them underneath. The next page is all about homophones, students are asked to identify the correct homophone that fits into the sentences.
