Work against the clock to solve the mystery before the dawn of the winter solstace, practicing history skills, critical thinking skills, teamwork and much more. Created with a target age of 11 to 14, this challenging escape room should provide a fun and educational end-of-year activity for your students! Set in the ancient Egypt exhibit at the British Museum, the escape room requires the students to follow a set of clues in their quest to find a missing scroll, believed to contain the secrets of the ancient Egyptian sun god, Ra. Professor Evelyn Westwood, the renowned archaeologist who discovered it, has vanished under mysterious circumstances, and the scroll has gone with her. By solving a collection of puzzles, your students will be guided from room to room on their quest to find a sacred missing artifact, the lost scroll of Ra. You can view the introductory video here. While the escape room is intended to be challenging, there is a great deal of support available to help your students in their quest, including explainer videos and animated hints/solutions that can accessed on the main PowerPoint. Who’s who? Do you know your Romano Britons from your Anglo Saxon? LO: To understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and use them to make connections and draw contrasts (KS2) LO: To apply the above to the study of an aspect or theme in British history that consolidates and extends pupils’ chronological knowledge from before 1066 (KS3) A complete activity to help children understand the similarities and differences between the Anglo Saxon and Romano British societies in Britain during the first millennium. The activity consists of: Teaching Input: 1. A PowerPoint identifying the key similarities and differences between the Romano Britons and Anglo Saxons including information about their: - Origins - settlements - everyday lives - lives of women and children - laws and punishments - beliefs - stories and legends - legacy. This can either be run as an introduction, or shared with children in groups or pairs. Independent Task: 2. A sorting activity consisting of a series of statements which apply to Romano Britons, Anglo Saxons, both, or neither. (This includes a fact sheet for teacher use, providing the correct answers and a series of websites which provide additional source information) 3. A set of different templates to allow you to choose how this information is then represented. Challenge / Extension / AG&T Using websites listed, children could try to find additional information about both peoples. This unit gives children the opportunity to understand the features of instructions as a text type. In the first week, children will engage with the text through research, a hands-on toy washing challenge and the opportunity to create their own ‘Woolly Mammoth Cleaning Kit’. They will become familiar with the text type by following instructions to make their own milk bottle mammoth models and identifying features of the text. There is a grammar focus on using prepositions and imperative verbs. In the second week, pupils will use drama to develop ideas and extend vocabulary. They will then plan their own set of instructions and they will draft, edit and present their final written outcome.
